The Star Wars franchise remains one of those great options to watch with the whole family. Whether it’s one of the movies or one of the latest TV shows, there is something for different interests within the vast universe. Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld is the latest miniseries to come to Disney+, and there are a lot of questions about whether it’s also a good option for the family.
With the title of the show, it’s understandable to question whether this is a series that works for the kids. After all, the idea of the “underworld” can lead to a lot of questions about whether it’s going to be suitable for younger members of the family, because that means going into death and hell.
Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld age rating: Explaining the TV-PG rating
Well, this series is still suitable for the kids, so get into the Star Wars franchise with them. The series is officially rated TV-PG, which means that it’s aimed at those over seven, although with parents around. This is still a series that involves a few battles and the talk of death, and those topics are going to bring up discussions and thoughts.
Sex & nudity: There isn’t anything related to sex or nudity in this animated Star Wars series. This is focused on rebellions and a former assassin who is trying to escape her old life.
Violence & gore: The level of violence is why the series is rated TV-PG and not TV-Y7. It is on the slightly more moderate side when it comes to one particular scene, with a character impaled by lightsabers. However, the majority of kids have seen much worse in other Star Wars movies and shows, including the original movie that started the first trilogy off!
Language: There is no profanity throughout the series.
Alcohol & drugs: While not traditional, there are times when the characters drink. It’s classed as drinking for the Star Wars universe, with their own names for the drinks involved. However, it’s on the mild side, and nothing that your kids aren’t used to. Just think of how we find Han in the first movie!
Overall verdict: Who is Star Wars: Tales of the Underworld appropriate for?
The series meets its TV-PG rating throughout. There are some violent scenes, but they’re nothing overly frightening or gratuitous. This is something that you’d expect from an animated Star Wars show, with the fight scenes on the more exciting side for the kids in the house.
This could be a great start for some of the younger kids. I do find that the animated shows connect well with them because they’re more like the cartoons they watched in the past. As they get to know the characters and the universe, you can jump into the rest of the movies with them!
