Happy Star Wars Day! May the Fourth is a great day to pull your kids into the world of Star Wars, but where do you start?

Let’s just start with the movies first. There are nine movies in the main franchise -- although there are a lot of people who will say there are only three! Then there are a couple of spin-off movies that continue the storylines elsewhere in the universe.

The movies are a great way to introduce your kids to something that you know and love, and you need to do it in the right order. So let's break them down both in chronological order, and order by release date.

Where to stream the Star Wars movies

The good news is everything is in one place. You can watch all the movies (and the shows if you want to get into them) on Disney+.

Now you just need to decide which order you’ll want the movies. There are two options. You can work with the release date order, or you can work with the franchise chronological order. Yes, they are very different, for all the newbies out there. Keep in mind that this is only for the Star Wars movies and not the many shows.

Star Wars movies in release date order

We’ll start with the release date order. This is arguably the best way to watch them, as this is the order in which they were created and released in theaters.

Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie (2008)
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Star Wars movies in chronological order

As you can tell from the titling of the movies, the release date was out of order of the universe’s chronological order. Not only do we need to figure out the release of the main nine movies, but there are the other side stories, and where they fit into the timeline.

Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999)
Star Wars: Episode II – Attack of the Clones (2002)
Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie (2008)
Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005)
Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018)
Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (2016)
Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope (1977)
Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi (1983)
Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens (2015)
Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi (2017)
Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Now it’s up to you on how you watch the movies with the kids this Star Wars Day! I recommend in release date order, especially for the main set of movies. The only downside? You’re treating the kids to the best movies, first.
