Smurfs age rating: Explaining the PG-rating
Of course, this is a franchise that is beloved by the kids, so they are sure to want to head to theaters this weekend to see it. The good news is that it’s officially rated PG in the United States, and it’s received a U (Universal) rating, 6+ rating, and a G rating in other parts of the world. This would suggest that it’s perfect for youngsters, but we’ll break down the rating to explain it all.
Sex & nudity: While there is nothing shown on screen, there are the odd comments or jokes that are designed for the adults watching it. They are also designed to go over the heads of younger viewers.
Violence & gore: This can be on the severe side for a kids' movie, as there is a scene where a character's arms are cut off. However, this is a clay scene, and it’s not the actual characters. If your children get over-emotional about such scenes, then it’s something to keep in mind and prepare yourself for.
Language: The word “smurf” is a derogatory one in some parts of this universe, and that’s how it can be used by some characters. It can also be used in crude ways and for double meanings, as it used in a few other animated movies.
Alcohol & drugs: There are a couple of cocktails shown, but this is on the mild level with the intended audience in mind.
Overall verdict: Who is Smurfs appropriate for?
Overall, this is a great movie to take the kids to. The PG rating does suggest that it’s for ages seven and up, but this is going to depend on your children and how emotional they get over certain scenes. Overall, I think it is an appropriate age to go see it.
There are some scenes that could make young kids a little anxious, but the idea is to take the Smurfs on an adventure. Know that there is a positive outcome, a little like you would expect from something like Trolls and Onward.
Smurfs is currently in theaters.
