Many Legend of Zelda fans are excited to see the live-action movie that’s coming in 2027, but there’s some disappointing news. The release date is being pushed back a little.

The original plan was to release The Legend of Zelda on March 27, 2027. However, due to the production time frame, that date has had to change. It’s not that much later, especially compared to Disney’s Avengers: Doomsday, which fans will have to wait months for after being moved from May 2026 to December 2026!

According to Deadline, the new release date for the live-action Legend of Zelda movie will now be May 7, 2027. It’s not that much later, and there is a genuine reason for it. Production is just taking longer than initially anticipated.

Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), sharing that production is to blame, and that the creators want to make sure that this movie is as great as possible. Waiting a few weeks to ensure that everything looks great is worth it, as long as it turns out to be a spectacular movie.

So far, there are few details about the movie. It isn’t clear which video game the story will follow, or if it will be something like Fallout, which takes place in conjunction with the games rather than following a particular storyline. There is also no casting as of yet, which now makes more and more sense why production has been pushed back.

To be honest, the later release date could be better for the movie as a whole. The first weekend of May is usually viewed as the start of the summer releases, and this is when some of the biggest movies of the year are released. On top of that, it moves The Legend of Zelda out of the path of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, which is still on track to be released in early March 2027.

Sure, the original weekend was free, but there are some people who choose not to go on opening weekend. Putting two family-friendly movies in the same month is on the questionable side, especially in the current state of the economy. Spacing them out could work out better for all.

Of course, by pushing the release back, there is pressure on the Zelda creators to get this release right. Video game adaptations have been hit and miss over the years, and there are a lot of old and new Zelda fans out there.

The Legend of Zelda will now be released in theaters on May 7, 2027.
