When Nintendo released its new app, it came with some exciting news. Another Nintendo classic game is getting a live-action movie.
It’s all about The Legend of Zelda, which likely won’t be too surprising for those who had heard the initial news back in November 2023. Nintendo and Sony were teaming up to bring a live-action movie, with The Maze Runner’s director Wes Ball attached.
According to Deadline, Ball is still attached to the production. As well as The Maze Runner movies, Ball has brought Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes to life.
When will The Legend of Zelda head to theaters?
While announcing that the movie was a go, Nintendo also shared that the release date would happen on March 26, 2027. For those who are keeping track of family movies coming out, this is a week after the release of Sonic the Hedgehog 4, so it will be interesting to see how the two movies perform against each other, or whether a release date will be pushed to avoid too much competition.
There is a Legendary Warner Bros. Monsterverse movie heading to theaters that exact same weekend as Legend of Zelda, but it’s not entirely clear which one. This probably won’t change the release plans for either, as they’re likely to aim toward different audiences — and as Barbie and Oppenheimer found, sometimes competition is a good thing.

Which game is The Legend of Zelda movie based on?
There are no details on which version of the Zelda games this movie will be based on. There have been multiple iterations over the years, including the Link’s Awakening and Breath of the Wild. In fact, the franchise has 29 games so far, and there are still more in the works.
The movie may benefit from opting for a Fallout approach, as that Prime Video series quickly landed a stellar following by not following any of the game storylines, creating its own but also offering easter eggs for the game fans. It performed much better than Borderlands, which haphazardly fused game storylines and characters while boasting a cast that just didn’t accurately reflect the franchise's roster of beloved — except for the insufferable Claptrap!
hopeAs a fan of The Legend of Zelda franchise, this is a movie that I’m apprehensive about, but I’ll go to see in theaters. I do hope it gains a similar success rate to Fallout and The Super Mario Bros.
