It was hard to imagine Dexter Morgan coming back, but he has done so in Dexter: Resurrection. Two episodes of the Dexter: New Blood sequel series are now available to watch, with eight more to come over the coming weeks.
Of course, Dexter fans want to immediately jump into the new series. There are so many questions, including how Dexter is even alive after it seemed like New Blood had ended with his death. The problem is that this remains a heavy and dark series. It may not be suitable for the children in your house.
While Dexter, Dexter: New Blood, and even Dexter: Original Sin are a great place to start for an idea of what to expect, this show is much darker and gorier than the two of them. I highly recommend watching the first two episodes yourself to get an idea before watching with the kids around.

Dexter: Resurrection age rating: This series earns its TV-MA rating
The new Dexter series is officially rated TV-MA for those 18 and over, and it immediately earns that age rating. Those who were on the fence with the gore of the original show will want to prepare themselves for this one!
Sex & nudity: There is a brief mention of sperm in the first couple of episodes. Now, this could get worse with the coming episodes, but for the most part, this series is going to be focused on Dexter using his abilities and urges to get rid of the worst of the worst out there.
Violence & gore: Dexter: Resurrection has certainly upped the level of violence and gore compared to the original series and New Blood. We get time spent on the murder victims, especially in the second episode. We’re only two episodes in, so I could imagine this getting even heavier as the creators push the boundaries.
Language: There are a fair few F-bombs dropped throughout the first two episodes, with that being the worst of the swear words. I don’t think this is anything more than the original series or New Blood. There are plenty of mentions of the B-words, S-word, and other similar terminology.
Alcohol & drugs: This remains moderate, especially for such a twisted series. Murder victims are drugged to subdue them, and we also see characters drink alcohol now and then. Again, I could see this getting much worse as the episodes go on. We have to remember that Dexter goes after some of the worst killers out there, and they are not afraid to use drugs to their advantage against their victims.
Overall verdict: Who is Dexter: Resurrection appropriate for?
While some older teens may have watched Dexter and Dexter: New Blood, as a parent, I would watch Dexter: Resurrection alone at first. This could be a little too heavy for some teenagers, especially those around 15 to 16, who may have watched the other two shows.
This is written and produced for 18+, and it certainly earns its age rating early on. Just keep in mind that I’m writing this based on just two episodes out of 10, and it’s sure to get heavier!
Dexter: Resurrection airs on Fridays on Paramount+ with Showtime.
