We head back to Miami 1991 to see how Dexter Morgan got his start as a serial killer. Is Dexter: Original Sin something to watch with the kids around?
You know the story of Dexter Morgan. You know who he kills, and why. There are even elements of his origin story told throughout the original series starring Michael C. Hall. Well, it’s time to see it all play out, with Patrick Gibson taking on the lead role.
We head back to 1991, as Dexter realizes that he’s not like the others. He’s not alone, though. Thanks to his dad, he can give into his serial killer ways without getting caught. Of course, there is a moral code to live by when killing, and that’s something he learns from his dad.
Dexter: Original Sin is not for the kids
The original series was an R-rated show. It shouldn’t be that surprising to hear that Dexter: Original Sin isn’t something for the kids either. While it’s not officially rated, a TV-MA rating is what to expect. Let’s take a look at why after watching the first episodes.
Sex & nudity: So far, the series hasn’t brought too much in the way of sex and nudity. I’d expect that to change a little as time goes on, though. This isn’t about Dexter finding love, though. It’s about his serial killer ways.
Violence & gore: The show certainly earns a TV-MA rating with the level of violence and gore throughout the first few episodes. Without spoilers, the first episode includes the death of a child in a swimming pool, and nothing is hidden when it comes to the realities of that. Dexter becomes a blood splatter analyst genius, so it’s normal to see the blood splatter around. After all, how else do we see him do his job?
Language: This series does not hold back from the profanity, just like the original series. It doesn’t need to since it’s on a streaming platform. Expect a lot of F-bombs. The only word I haven’t heard used yet is the C-word.
Alcohol & drugs: There is some moderate drinking throughout the series. I expect we’ll see the drug use climb, especially when it comes to drugs used to subdue victims. We have to remember who we’re dealing with.
Overall verdict: Who is Dexter: Original Sin appropriate for?
As an adult, you’ll want to dive into the prequel series. You’ll want to see how Dexter got his start. However, this isn’t for everyone in the house.
At a pinch, I’d say those who are 16 and up can watch it. I would say it’s made for adults, though, and it will depend on the maturity of your children. If they can watch Dexter, they can watch this series, so keep that in mind.
Dexter: Original Sin airs on Paramount+ with Showtime on Fridays.
