The sly, wise-cracking orange tabby with a penchant for Italian food will be prowling back for his much-awaited sequel. We're talking about Garfield, and this lifelong fan is more than ready to see him on the big screen again in his follow-up to 2024's The Garfield Movie.

In the animated film, Garfield is reunited with his estranged father, but under illegal circumstances. However, despite the rough journey, father and son reconciled, and Garfield wants him in his life to make up for time lost from when he was a kitten. While the movie did stray from the strip's origins, it provided a great lesson on family and forgiveness, and just because Garfield can be an antagonist (he's a cat in true form), he does love his family with a full heart.

Development and production are currently underway for the second installment, with our hopes for a theatrical release sometime in 2026. The story is currently under wraps, but you can rest assured that it'll be a continuation of the first film, or it could take on a new direction to keep things fresh and interesting.

One thing that we do know for sure about The Garfield Movie 2 is that actor Chris Pratt, as reported by Deadline, will be returning to voice the comedic cat with his snarky attitude and all. In the first movie, notable stars such as Samuel L. Jackson, Hannah Winningham, Ving Rhames, Nicholas Hoult, Cecily Strong, Harvey Guillén, and Snoop Dogg have provided their talents to voice the supporting characters.

In the 2000s movies, A Garfield Movie and A Garfield Movie 2: A Tail of Two Kitties, which were produced under Disney's 20th Century Entertainment, Garfield was voiced by standup comedian and actor Bill Murray. Before him, Lorenzo Music gave the fat cat his attitude in the TV specials and the Emmy Award-winning series, Garfield and Friends.

Garfield is considered a Millennial symbol, as he reigned in the 1980s with his best-selling comic strips, which were created by Jim Davis, television appearances, and a large mass of merchandise, ranging from toys to clothes, books, and VHS cassettes. While merchandise is still going strong, thanks to the fans who can't get enough of the feisty feline, it's the nostalgia among the older ones who feel the original connection.

The Garfield Movie and its sequel are produced by Alcon Pictures and distributed by Sony. Davis will reprise his role as an executive producer.

You can see Garfield in his original animation on Peacock, where his series and TV specials live, Disney+ and Hulu for the 2000s versions, and the 2024 production can be streamed on Netflix.
