Just because a movie involves teenagers doesn’t mean that it’s for the actual teens. Time Cut is a horror/sci-fi movie that brings some great thrills, but is it for the teens?

Time Cut follows Lucy Fields (played by Outer Banks' Madison Bailey), who is living in the shadow of her murdered sister. She never met Summer, who died years before she was born, but she’s always reminded of her through her parents and people in the same town.

When she ends up traveling back in time to the year summer was killed, Lucy has to figure out what to do. Does she stop the serial killer who took her sister’s life, or does she allow history to repeat itself?

Time Cut age rating explained: Why is the movie PG-13?

This is a PG-13 movie. That means that it is aimed at teenagers, and it should mean minimal scary moments. It could even work for tweens and younger children depending on how easily frightened they are. Let’s break down the rating to understand why Netflix set it at PG-13.

Sex & nudity: There is no sex or nudity throughout the movie. We see two girls quickly kiss, but that’s it.

Language: The swearing is kept to a minimum, despite there being a serial killer on the loose. Hell and damn are the most common words used, and there are a couple of instances of the S-word. The D-word is also uttered once.

Violence & Gore: This is where the PG-13 rating really comes into play. There is a serial killer on the loose, and that means murder, right? While there is some murdering going on, there’s not that much shown on the screen. One of the worst moments is when a teenager is killed by her head being pushed into an escalator at the mall. We don’t see her face, but there is blood splatter on the floor.

There is also a scene where a character is stabbed in the neck by a broken CD. While the wound is briefly shown, there isn’t a high level of blood or gore included.

Alcohol & Drugs: There are teen parties, which means there is some alcohol being consumed by the characters. There isn’t a high use of alcohol or any use of drugs throughout Time Cut.

Overall verdict: Who is Time Cut appropriate for?

This is a teen movie made for teens. It’s a great look at how slasher movies can be made age-appropriate, offering entertainment and lessons at the same time. I’d highly recommend it for tweens and teens who are interested in this genre.

Something that is great is the lesson of “what would you do?” How much changes if you go to the past and right a wrong? Is it possible to change fates, and what does the person who time traveled go back to? It makes it a great movie for children and teens to chat about afterward.

Time Cut is now available to stream on Netflix.
