In some excellent news, the end credit scenes for The Super Mario Bros. Movie have paid off. There will be a second movie in the growing franchise.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie 2 was confirmed toward the end of 2024. However, it’s worth noting that this isn’t necessarily a direct sequel to the movie we originally got. There will be new characters from the Nintendo world that weren’t introduced in the first movie.
According to Parade, the sequel will be released in theaters on April 3, 2026. That’s not too long to wait, especially when you consider that it took more than a year to even get an ounce of confirmation that there would be a sequel. It also takes a long time for animation due to the way filming, artwork, and post-production work.
The date is a U.S. release date. Some countries will get it later, with Japan confirmed as getting it on April 26, 2026.
Who will return for the Super Mario Bros. Movie sequel?
As of right now, no actors have been confirmed as part of the sequel. It’s reasonable to assume that Keegan-Michael Key will return to voice Toad. Key is the one who confirmed that the sequel won’t quite be a sequel.
Chris Pratt voiced Mario with Charlie Day voicing Luigi. The two pulled their characters off, so it would make sense for them to return. Many would also love to have Anya Taylor-Joy return to voice Princess Peach.
What we do know is that the directors are returning. Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic will direct the sequel, and considering the first movie was already a hit, I have faith in this second one with them in charge.
What could the sequel be about?
The end credits of The Super Mario Bros. Movie hinted that we would get to see Yoshi appear. This is still plausible considering Key shared that the world would be expanded with new characters joining. Yoshi remains a firm favorite for fans of the game.
Many would also love to see Wario and Waluigi come into the story. They would make great villains for this sequel, pitting the mirrors of the characters against each other. Of course, there are the Koopalings, Bowser Jr., and so many more who would make perfect additions to the world that has only just begun to be established.
There is the promise of Easter eggs for the gaming fans. That’s what we need for the nostalgia.
The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now available to stream on Peacock.
