There’s a new reality show in town, and it’s all about FOX’s The Snake. Like with any reality show, while the age rating makes it suitable for kids, it’s probably not the show you want them to watch. And to be honest, it’s probably not one that they’ll want to watch.
The Snake follows a group of contestants on a hunt to win a life-changing sum of money. They play games that lead to them becoming “The Snake,” the one with control over the game each episode. The first episode certainly set up the rules of the game, and it gave us a good insight into what we can expect in the series moving forward.
At the end of the day, though, this is reality TV. That means there is going to be some language beeped out, as most people don’t end up thinking about what they’re saying when they’re in the middle of a game.
The Snake age rating: Explaining the TV-PG rating
As a reality show, The Snake is officially rated PG, which suggests that it is suitable for children. What it means really is that you can watch it without them walking in on something inappropriate, but they probably won’t want to sit and watch with you until they are in their older teen years.
Sex & nudity: There is no nudity shown on the screen. There may be some inclusion of women in bikinis and men in their swim shorts, but this is extremely mild compared to a few reality shows out there!
Violence & gore: There isn’t any violence or gore on the screen. We can’t rule out accidents from happening, and there are times when fights can happen in these types of games. However, they’re not scripted, and usually, the cameras will cut away when something like this happens.
Language: There is some language from the contestants, but it is all bleeped out when airing on the screen. We know what they’re likely saying, and it can bring up a conversation about why some of the confessionals are bleeped out.
Alcohol & drugs: These are adults competing for the money, and we do see them drinking when they’re relaxing in between the challenges. However, there are no drugs on show or spoken about, and there is no drinking in excess shown on the screen.
Overall verdict: Who is The Snake appropriate for?
Like any reality TV show on the broadcast networks, this is fine for the kids to see when you have it on. There’s nothing concerning in terms of the markers that create an age rating.
That being said, this series probably isn’t something that they’ll want to watch with you. There is a strategy to some of the game, and there isn’t as much action as children love to watch. For them, it’s not as good as PAW Patrol and Dragon Ball Z, so unless they’re teens and getting interested in the reality show genre, they’ll probably find the show a bit boring.
The Snake airs on Tuesdays at 9/8c on FOX.
