Season 1 of the Night Agent holds a 7.5 out of 10 rating on IMDb, but Season 2 certainly brought enough action and suspense to raise the bar even higher for the series. Fans of ‘spy-fi’ will find season 2 easy to binge, and you don’t necessarily have to watch the first season to follow the storyline. Another bonus: this series is totally teen-friendly.
About The Night Agent's TV-MA rating
While the series holds a TV-MA rating for language, smoking, and violence, this rating is very conservative from a parent’s point of view. The Night Agent has much less vulgar language than the popular teen show, Stranger Things, which only has a TV-14 rating. Smoking is very limited in the series, and violence occurs throughout every single episode, although that is to be expected from a spy thriller.
It is very rare to find a modern action series without some form of nudity or sexual references. While the co-stars of the show, Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan, have a love interest in each other, they share barely more than a few hugs and pecks on the lip throughout the 10 episodes. Instead, the show is very much focused on unraveling the complicated and intriguing plot. The lack of sexuality in The Night Agent makes it a great pick to watch with your pre-teen or teenager.
If language, smoking, violence, and even sexuality aren’t a major concern for The Night Agent, does the show really earn the TV-MA rating? Our vote is no. What could possibly contribute to the strict rating is the subject matter of conspiracies, government secrets, themes of treason, and cultural and political tension between enemy countries. Many of the issues in the series would make for quality discussions with your teen about political conflicts, human rights, and abuse of power.
Will this series be a hit for your teen?
Now that we’ve gotten past the rating, will your teen be interested in watching? If they can keep up with the speedy plot, then yes! The show picks up with Peter Sutherland, the star agent of Season 1, on a mission in Bangkok. When that mission goes wrong, he doesn’t know who to trust. The only person he can trust is his romantic interest, Rose, who tracks him down while he is in hiding, with her innovative facial recognition program, to save him from an unknown threat. Rose and Peter teeter throughout the series, taking major risks to protect each other.
Entangled in their strategy to uncover government secrets is Noor, a humble and thorough assistant, employed by the Iranian mission in New York City. Noor has her own plans to get her family out of Iran, undetected by her government, to escape a tyrannic regime and the forced military inscription of her brother. Will Rose and Peter be able to help her family? What they must ask in return could mean imprisonment or a death sentence for Noor. Peter, Rose, and other officials involved in trading government secrets struggle to decide whether the ends justify the means.
You can watch the first few episodes of The Night Agent in increments, but you’ll definitely be ready to binge by episode 4! Enjoy this series with your pre-teen and teen.
