Shrek 5 is officially coming to theaters, with the original cast returning
While details are slimmer than a non-ogre version of Fiona, Shrek 5 is officially coming to theaters. The news was confirmed via the DreamWorks Animation X (formerly Twitter account).
In the Tweet, DreamWorks provided a simple animation of a Shrek style number 5, complete with ears and all, hopping around a blue sky frame, to the tune of Smash Mouth's "All Star." In addition, they confirmed that the main cast are all returning to the voices they made famous.
"Not too Far, Far Away…" reads the post. "#Shrek 5 is coming to theaters on July 1, 2026 with Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz."
So yep, Mike Myers will be back as Shrek, Cameron Diaz as Fiona, and Eddie Murphy as Donkey. As for the rest of the cast, like Antonio Banderas as Puss in Boots? That's TBD, but fingers crossed they can lock down everyone else before too long.
The return of Shrek isn't a big surprise, as Murphy in particular has been teasing work being done on it while on his press tour for another legacy sequel, Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, for Netflix. He's also teased that a Donkey spinoff movie is coming as well, but it looks like Shrek 5 will be the first out of the gate.
It's also not a huge surprise as Shrek has been one of the most successful animated franchises of all time, with four theatrical movies, some of which won Oscars and premiered at Cannes, as well as spinoffs like the surprisingly excellent Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. And not to get all box office pundit in here, but the gap between Shrek Forever After in 2010 and Shrek 5 (or whatever it ends up being titled) in 2026 means that kids who grew up watching the Shrek movies now have kids of their own.
Regardless, it'll be a bit of a wait until we return to Far, Far Away. So why not pop in the first four Shrek movies in the meantime?
