Nimona parents guide: Is the Netflix animated film for kids?

Nimona first made waves after its premiere at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival in June 2023. Now, it's an Oscar-nominated film that is now available to stream on Netflix! If you want to know more about this movie, just keep on reading!

Nimona is based on the graphic novel book of the same name by cartoonist ND Stevenson. This film adaptation takes place in a science-fiction world reminscent of the Middle Ages in kingdom that is protected by the 'Institute for Elite Knights', which was created by the Gloreth, a heroine in the kingdom. The lead characters are Nimona, the titular character and a shapeshifter and Ballister 'Bal' Boldheart, a former knight who is accused of murdering the Queen Valerin. The duo team up in order to try and clear Bal's name and overthrow the Institute.

The voice cast of Nimona voice cast includes Chloë Grace Moretz (The Addams Family 2) as Nimona, Riz Ahmed (Venom) as Ballister 'Bal' Boldheart, Lorraine Toussaint (Wolfboy and the Everything Factory) as Queen Valerin, Beck Bennett (The Mitchells vs. The Machines) as Sir Thoddeus "Todd" Sureblade, and RuPaul Charles (Trolls Band Together) as Nate Knight. The film was produced by Annapurna Productions and distributed by Netflix. Fun fact: In Feb, the film was made available on YouTube via's Netflix's official channel! but was then changed to private.

Sex & Nudity: There are two characters who are seen kissing in the film.

Violence: There is some violence in this action-adventure animated film. Death is acknowledged in the film and there are also monsters present. Destruction of cities is seen though with the violence, depicted in this film, there is most likely a humorous undertone attributed to it.

Language: Very minimal course language is thrown around in this film. This language includes "butt," "stupid," "trash," "freak," "dang", and "dork". It's language that your own kids might throw around and is humorous language to both kids and adults.

Drinking & Drugs: Alcohol is present in this film. You'll see Nimona fall on beer bottles. Someone is also making alcoholic or at least alcohol-adjacent drink. It's not overly shown but there is a character who can be seen partaking in some form of drug-related activity but it's not present throughout the entirety of the film.

Overall Verdict: What Age Is Nimona Appropriate For?

Nimona is definitely a film for all ages! If there is one film in this Oscar line up that is made for kids, it's this one. The film has very positive messaging for young ones From the character of Bal who belives that everyone should find the good in other people even if they make mistakes. Even though the titular character can be a bit stubborn, it may be reminiscant of how kids in real life react to situations that might be frustrating or emotional. Essetionally, the animated film explores themes of teamwork identity, and fighting for what you believe in as well as risk-taking because even if you don't know what the outcome will be, it is always worth trying.
