New kids and family movies to stream for May, 2024: Thelma The Unicorn, Jim Henson Idea Man and more

It’s hard out there for a parent, particularly this month - May, 2024. Not only are there a dearth of theatrical releases for kids to check out, there’s not a lot new on streaming, either.

Now granted, plenty of library titles are coming to the various services. If you somehow have yet to watch Fantastic Mr. Fox or the Shrek movies, you’ve got multiple options there. And the always reliable Paddington is streaming, too. But when it comes to new releases? You’re mostly out of luck here, as the services lean on more adult fare.

That said, there are some streaming originals to highlight (see below), as well as the list of what’s coming, movie-wise, to your fave service.

Here are all the new kids and family movies to stream for May, 2024 including lists for Netflix, Prime Video, Hulu, Disney+, Peacock and Max.

Thelma The Unicorn

Based on the book by Aaron Blabey (The Bad Guys series), the film focuses on a pony who wants to become a famous singer, so she pretends to be a unicorn to make her dreams happen. The movie features the voices of Brittany Howard as Thelma, Will Forte, Jemaine Clement, Edi Patterson, Fred Armisen, and a ton more. And it comes from Jared and Jerusha Hess, best known for Napoleon Dynamite.

Jim Henson Idea Man

Ron Howard directs this documentary about the iconic creator of The Muppets and Sesame Street, featuring behind-the-scenes footage of Henson that has never been seen before. Get your hankies ready.
