10 Mother’s Days Movies to stream with kids and family: Mamma Mia!, Little Women, and more

Let Mom choose the movie - but make sure it’s appropriate for the whole family.

Today is Mother’s Day, and you’re going to want to do whatever Mom wants. And what she wants most is to chill out with the fam and watch a movie. Unfortunately, the streaming stratosphere is littered with movies that feature moms, but might not work for the kids.

For example: Psycho is a movie that features a mother. I don’t think that would be a great movie to watch with Mom or the family! Or more modern flicks like Everything Everywhere All At Once are phenomenal explorations of a mother and daughter’s relationship, but with an R-rating, it might not be right for ages 0-100.

That’s where we come in. Below is a list of films that are Mother’s Day-themed, and a-okay for everyone from Little Susie to Grandma June. Or whatever your names are, I don’t know, I can’t talk to you through the computer screen. That’s not how this works.

Intro out of the way, let’s get into 10 picks for Mother’s Day movies to stream today that are a-okay for the whole family.

The Addams Family (1999)

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, and they’re great for everyone – if you like your humor dark. Anjelica Huston as Morticia Addams is a fantastic mother, and seeing Gomez’s (Raul Julia) love for her is a testament to two great parents who don’t mind their kids killing each other now and again.

“We mothers stand still, so our daughters can look back to see how far they've come.” And you’re already crying. The Margot Robbie starring movie is all about mothers, daughters, and the legacy we leave. So what are you waiting for? Go watch it. Again.

While the 2012 Pixar film seems on the surface to be your typical princess-doesn’t-want-to-follow-her-destiny movie, when Merida’s mother gets turned into a bear it becomes something a whole lot more powerful.

Cheaper By The Dozen (2003)

Not only will watching Bonnie Hunt take care of 12 kids make her more appreciative of the (probably) less kids she has to take care of, but it’s frickin’ Bonnie Hunt. Come on.

Freaky Friday (2003)

Similarly, nothing is better for Mother’s Day than this classic remake, which finds Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan switching bodies – and learning to appreciate each other’s lives. With a sequel rumored, now is the time to revisit this classic.

The Incredibles 2

It’s no surprise that Disney is your hook-up for safe-for-family fare for Mother’s Day. While Incredibles is a superhero film and Mr. Incredible is the main character in the first one, check out the sequel to see just how crucial Holly Hunter’s Elastigirl is to keeping the super-family together.

Little Women (2019)

Greta Gerwig’s 2019 take on Little Women is a classic. And while it’s mostly about the little women instead of the… Large… Woman? I don’t know. Anyway, as Saorsie Ronan famously says in the movie: “women.”

Mamma Mia!

Here we go again! The musical classic features a bevy of stars including Meryl Strep as the titular Mamma. You know the songs. You know the dance moves. Put on this and the sequel, and make a whole day of it.

The Sound of Music

Speaking of classic musicals, you can’t do much better than the 1965 OG starring Julie Andrews. While the Von Trapp’s mom might be gone, you can solve a problem like “what to watch on Mother’s Day by putting on this flick.

Yes Day

Though this may bring up some dangerous ideas, Jennifer Garner stars as a mom who decides to give her kids a “Yes Day,” aka a day where the parents don’t say no to anything. Hilarity ensues, but again, I must stress this might turn out poorly for parents once your own kids start demanding a yes day.
