In a twist I don’t think anyone predicted would ever actually happen, Disney’s Freaky Friday sequel is officially in production, with Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan back in the leads. Disney confirmed the news via a press release provided to The Parent Watch, alongside a picture of the duo sitting in front of their respective trailers.
To be clear, this is the sequel to the 2003 version of Freaky Friday, which is actually the third version of the movie, which has spawned six movies so far overall – seven if you include this upcoming sequel. In the 2003 version, Lohan and Curtis played Anna and Tess Coleman, a daughter and mother respectively who switch bodies on the Friday of the title.
And the duo won’t be the only folks coming back for Freakier Friday – or whatever it ends up being titled. Joining them are Mark Harmon, Chad Michael Murray, Christina Vidal Mitchell, Haley Hudson, Lucille Soong, Stephen Tobolowsky, and Rosalind Chao, who all reprise their roles from the 2003 movie. New cast members include Julia Butters, Sophia Hammons, Manny Jacinto, and Maitreyi Ramakrishnan.
Not returning, however, is Mark Waters, who directed the 2003 movie from a script by Heather Hatch and Leslie Dixon. This sequel will instead be directed by Nisha Ganatra, from a script by Elyse Hollander. It’s produced by Curtis, Andrew Gunn and Kristin Burr, and Lohan, Ann Marie Sanderlin and Nathan Kelly all serve as EPs.
The currently filming in Los Angeles flick will find Anna with a future stepdaughter of her own, and as her wedding draws close, “Tess and Anna discover that lightning might indeed strike twice.”
The sequel is scheduled to hit theaters in 2025, on a specific date TBA.
