2024 will see the release of a few sequels to family movie franchises. Here are three that we're excited about seeing.

A new year brings new movies, and there are some exciting additions in 2024. Some of them are for the whole family, and they’re highly anticipated sequels to franchises we’ve come to know and love. In fact, some of these family movie sequels we didn’t initially realize we needed them until we saw them on the list.

Not sure what is worth checking out with the kids? Whether you want to watch them in theaters or on streaming, here are three sequels to popular family movie franchises that we’re excited about.

This list is in release date order.

Megamind 2

The first movie came out in 2010. As popular as it was, we didn’t get a sequel. By this point, you likely just got used to telling your kids that there wasn’t another movie to watch. That is until now!

The big-headed blue former villain is back. This time, the Death Syndicate is back to cause trouble, and Megamind needs to pretend to be a villain once more. While he does that, he’ll gather his good friends together to take down the bad guys and save the town once more.

Megamind 2 is streaming exclusively on Peacock on Friday, March 1.

Inside Out 2

Another sequel that has taken a long time to arrive is Inside Out 2. Like with when Toy Story 3 came out, the world of Inside Out has moved forward in time with us. So, we’ll see Riley grown up and heading to college. That’s sure to bring a bunch of new emotions but also some new core memories.

One of the great things about this movie is that it includes Anxiety. This is one of those emotions that people have been forced to push down for too long. It’s time to accept it, own it, and deal with it. And Inside Out 2 could help children and even adults figure that out if it’s done right.

Inside Out 2 is in theaters on Friday, June 14.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3

The first movie was one of those we were apprehensive about. It didn’t help that Sonic just looked too creepy for a kids’ movie. The good news is the developers got back to work, and we got an awesome movie for the whole family. The sequel didn’t disappoint either. Now we have a third movie coming out.

The best news is that Dr. Robotnik is back. Yes, Jim Carrey is officially returning. I don’t think there is a Sonic movie without him at this point. The end of the second movie may have left his fate in question, but now we get to find out how he survived.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 is slated for theaters on Friday, Dec. 20.
