The toys of the Toy Story franchise will be out of the toy boxes for a brand new installment, and we're ready to play! Woody, Buzz Lightyear, Jessie, Hamm, Forky, and the rest of the child playthings will be reuniting for Toy Story 5! The announcement came at the annual D23 2024 Expo fan event on Friday, August 9th.

In February 2023, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced the creation of new sequels to Zootopia, Frozen, and Toy Story, giving continuity to the conglomerate's most profitable and popular franchises. Fans would encounter new characters and plots, and Toy Story 5 "got some really cool stuff," according to Pixar's COO, Pete Docter. He's also the director of classics such as Inside Out and Onward.

During a panel at D23, a teaser was released for the fifth Toy Story film, calling it "their next chapter."

In today's cyber-charged world, kids gravitate toward digital devices, leaving traditional toys abandoned and forgotten. But as depressing as it sounds, the dilemma makes a perfect storyline for Toy Story 5. As young Bonnie grows up, she's getting more into screens instead of strings and batteries instead of buttons.

Andrew Stanton-the director of Toy Story 5 and has been on the Pixar trai since the early nineties-shared what to expect from Woody and the gang.

"This time around, it’s toy meets tech. It’s going to be fun, and we can’t wait for you all see it in the summer of 2026!"

Additionally, a teaser sneak-peek was shown doing the D23 panel and was uploaded collaboratively on Pixar's and Toy Story's Instagram pages.

In the clip, the Claw pulls up an iconic three-eyed alien holding the title card. Woody, Jesse, and Buzz come into the lens' focus, ready to be played again. It's a sweet sentiment to the past Toy Story films, as we all fell in love with these characters and their lives. You wouldn't think toys would have a profound effect, but they do because they shape our imaginations and develop our growth.

The next slide shows a still of Bonnie, lost in the online world of her iPad, as the toys peer over the footboard, feeling neglected by their kid.

Per the caption an Stanton's announcement, Summer 2026 will be Toy Story 5's theatrical release. It'll be two years, but knowing Disney and Pixar, the movie will be long worth the wait.

Tim Allen, Tom Hanks, Joan Cusack, John Ratzenberger, Wallace Shawn, Lori Allen, and Annie Potts will be reprising their respective characters.
