There is no doubt that the Descendants movies are a lot of fun. The fourth one is now out. Just who is Descendants: The Rise of Red aimed at in the family? Is it suitable for kids?
Descendants: The Rise of Red is a spin-off movie to the first three. It follows mostly a new cast, although Uma, the daughter of Ursula, is now the principal of the school. She has opened the doors for all. After all, she knows what it’s like to be viewed down on because you’re the daughter of a villain.
Red is the daughter of the Queen of Hearts, who has a plot to take down Cinderella. Red and Chloe, the daughter of Cinderella, team up in an attempt to prevent the Queen of Hearts from ever becoming evil. Is it possible to change history?
Descendants: The Rise of Red is rated G for all audiences
This is a movie that is aimed toward the entire family. That shouldn’t be surprising considering the first three Descendants movies and the fact that it’s on Disney+. Here’s a breakdown of everything that makes up the age rating.
Sex & nudity: This isn’t a movie that focuses on relationships. At least, not the romantic ones. Red does show an interest in Charming at one point when Red and Chloe are in the past. As soon as Chloe points out that’s her dad, Red backs off. The interest is more of a crush than anything else. Don't expect any sex or nudity.
Violence & gore: This is one of those franchises that focuses on how words and non-violent actions can change the path for everyone. There isn’t any heavy violence in the movie. There is a moment where Cinderella is assumed to have been executed, but that isn’t shown on screen.
Language: This is a Disney movie, which means no language at all. The worst you’ll hear is Red saying things “suck” a lot. That’s not even mild!
Alcohol & drugs: Again, this is a Disney movie. It’s aimed at younger audiences. There is no drinking. There’s no even the use of potions despite it being all about magic. The magic here is time travel.
Overall verdict: Who is Descendants: The Rise of Red appropriate for?
This is a movie for the entire family. Kids will love it for the storytelling and the music, while adults will love the nostalgia of having Brandy’s Cinderella back. It’s an enjoyable and fun jaunt into the world of Disney after the Happily Ever Afters.
