Deadpool & Wolverine parents guide: This Marvel movie is not for the kids

Kids want to see Wolverine back in action, but there's some bad news about this latest flick. Deadpool & Wolverine is a Deadpool movie at its heart.

The world of Marvel is usually for the majority of the family. These superhero movies teach younger kids right from wrong while giving them heroes to root for. Wolverine is one of those heroes that kids love, so naturally, they’ll want to see the latest movie the X-man is in. It’s all about Deadpool & Wolverine.

This is actually a Deadpool movie. When Deadpool learns that his whole universe is about to be wiped out because there’s no more Wolverine (following on from the events of Logan), he goes in search of a Wolverine to replace the one lost. This sends them both on a journey of unlikely friendship as they face a common enemy or two (or many more!).

As it is a Deadpool movie, it shouldn’t surprise you to hear that it’s an R-rated movie. However, is anything toned down enough for at least the tweens and teens to watch it?

Deadpool & Wolverine earns its R rating immediately

From the start, you can tell that this franchise hasn’t changed despite it being part of Marvel. Our lead character remains the complete opposite of a hero, although he does make it clear that he wants to matter in the world. He wants to do good, and he wants to be an Avenger. That doesn’t mean he’ll lose the F-bombs, though.

Sex & nudity: There isn’t any visual sex in the movie, but there are plenty of mentions of it and a lot of innuendos. There are moments of lusting over Wolverine’s body as well. Look out for a lot of raunchy dance moves and grabbing of all the private areas. This is Deadpool!

Language: There are plenty of F-bombs dropped throughout the movie. The only swear word I don’t remember hearing is the C-word. There are some rather colorful ways of using swear words for name-calling throughout, just as you would expect from the franchise.

Violence & gore: Oh yes, there is plenty of both. The movie opens with Deadpool digging up a corpse and using that corpse in a fight scene. There are also fights between Wolverine and Deadpool that get extremely bloody thanks to both of these characters being able to regenerate. There is also an epic battle toward the end of the movie, but I don’t want to spoil who that is again.

The gore is visual. We see the stab and bullet wounds, with a lot of blood spray in moments of the film. As one character can’t heal, we even get to see bruises around his eyes from his broken nose.

Alcohol & drugs: You should know Blind Al enough now to know that she loves one particular drug. While there is no visual proof that she takes it, she mentions it a lot and calls it by all of its known terms. There is also a lot of drinking, with Wolverine in a bar drinking a whole bottle of liquor early on in the movie. This Wolverine is a drunk. So much so that he drinks rubbing alcohol straight from the bottle!

Overall verdict: Who is Deadpool & Wolverine appropriate for?

While this is a movie that the kids will want to see, this is not for them. It earns its R rating from the very beginning due to the level of violence in it. I’d potentially say that 16 and over would be okay watching it as the violence is on a superhero level rather than something that is set for real life, but it still gets heavy at points.
