Beetlejuice is a must-watch with the kids before the sequel (and where to watch it)
Watch out for how often you say his name! He may just come to haunt you. Beetlejuice is a lot of fun for the whole family, and you need to watch it with the kids before Beetlejuice 2 hits the theaters.
The 1988 movie has not lost its charm over the years. The plot follows a recently deceased couple who are not allowed to leave the home they once lived in. The problem is a new family moves in, and the ghosts want to scare them away. So, they contact a charismatic “bio-exorcist” called Betelgeuse to scare them away.
It’s a horror comedy, so there are some darker moments. However, it is rated PG, so it works for the whole family.
Beetlejuice is filled with laughter and heart
While you want to watch movies with the kids that are entertaining, you’ll also want to watch something that offers some life lessons. That’s certainly what Beetlejuice offers.
The new family, the Deetzes, are awful people on the surface of it. They are in it for the money, and children can quickly learn life lessons that money doesn’t make anyone more important or happier.
Then there are the Maitlands, the deceased couple, who are attached to their home. There are lessons about moving on and accepting that people are different.
By the end of the movie, the two families realize that they need to live in harmony with each other. There are lessons about falling into traps for personal gain and about watching out for manipulative people.
It really does come down to the entertainment value for the kids, though. There are some darker and scarier moments, but this is a comedy at the heart of it. And it’s a bizarre comedy. As children want to move from scary animated movies to scary live-action ones, Beetlejuice is the place to turn. With the sequel coming out later this month, it only makes sense to watch it now.
The sequel is a direct sequel as well. Not only is Michael Keaton returning as the titular character, but Winona Ryder will also return as Lydia Deetz.
