What happens when you put a movie star and a widowed writer together? You get A Family Affair, but is this something to watch with the kids around?

A Family Affair follows Zac Efron’s Chris, an actor who has become someone the paparazzi always follows. He so scared of commitment that he has the same spiel for each woman. That’s why his assistant, Zara (Joey King), is so worried when she finds out he and her mother, Brooke (Nicole Kidman), are together.

We get a rather tame rom-com that touches on facing fears and accepting love in all its forms. The question is whether this is any good for the kids.

A Family Affair is a PG-13 movie

This Netflix movie is officially rated PG-13. That means it is supposed to be suitable for those who are 13 and above. It could be suitable for those under 13, but it’s worth watching it with them. Here’s a breakdown of what to expect in the Netflix movie.

Sex & nudity: As a PG-13 movie, there isn’t that much in the way of heavy sex and nudity. There is one scene where Chris and Brooke hook up. Chris rips Brooke’s dress off, but her bra remains on. It is clear that they are supposed to be having sex at one point, but it’s not shown in the scene. That is the most visual that we get throughout the entire movie.

Language: There is some swearing throughout the movie. The worst is the S-word dotting in throughout it, starting from the very beginning.

Violence & gore: There isn’t much violence. Zara does end up with a bump on the head when she catches Brooke and Chris together, but that’s because she falls over and catches herself. Chris does play an actor in an action movie, and there is some action where he’s carrying a gun around, but he doesn’t get involved in any on-screen fights.

Alcohol & drugs: This movie doesn’t include any drugs, but there is some light drinking. At one point, characters are seeing in the new year, and two characters drink beer during this scene.

Overall verdict: Who is A Family Affair appropriate for?

This is a movie that makes sense to have a PG-13 rating, and it does work for all teenagers in terms of sex and violence. However, the storytelling just may not be something that younger teens enjoy. It’s something that older teens could find amusing.
