Disney+ added the 1999 high school romantic comedy 10 Things I Hate About You this week. The movie stars the late Heath Ledger in one of his early roles as the rebellious Patrick Verona and Julia Stiles as Kat Stratford. 10 Things is based on Shakespeare's play, "The Taming of the Shrew," and incorporated several of its elements into the film's narrative and setting.

A pretty but introverted girl named Kat (Stiles) meets and falls in love with Patrick, who's only playing with her emotions as he was paid by one of his friends. The couple has a rather intense relationship, but mildly speaking, Kat and Patrick realized their each other's person.

Now that we have the plot summary down let's talk about its rating. 10 Things I Hate About You carries the typical teenage rating, PG-13, meaning it will have some content that may be sensitive to some viewers. For the most part, thirteen should be the appropriate age to watch the film without a parent. But if parents decide to have a movie night with 10 Things, the film is a great start to discuss Shakespeare, who inspired it before he knew.

10 Things I Hate About You is geared to teenagers and has all of the teenage angst and curiosities that occurs during that awkward age period. As such, it's going to have adolescent references and material, so the PG- 13 rating makes absolute sense.

Let's break it down.

Sex & Nudity: Surprisingly, there's no nudity in 10 Things, but it doesn't escape the sexual innuendo talk among teens and the doodling of private parts. There's also kissing throughout and the basic dating dilemmas.

Violence: Other than a couple of gym-related incidents such as a golf ball smacking a student, and comedic slapstick, there's no violence.

Language: General cursing throughout the film. The "P," "S," and "C" words are used, and both female and male derogatory terms are vocalized. A computer monitor also displays graphic language.

Drinking & Drugs: Underage kids enter a bar and drink. At a high school party, many teens drink and there's smoking. However, there's very slight drug usage, as this is a film structured towards high school.

Overall verdict: What age is 10 Things I Hate About You appropriate for?

As the rating recommends, thirteen is the recommended age, as they'll start wondering about their high school futures an what it'll entail. While movies aren't a realistic light on real-life situations, they do help cope with their stresses.

If you enjoy the talent and chemistry that's Heath Ledger, than 10 Things is a must-watch, and your teen will equally love the movie.
