Outlander parents guide: This romance time travel drama is definitely not for kids
A new season of Outlander is here. Well, the second half of a new season is here. Droughtlander is over, and you’ll want to jump straight into the new episodes.
With episodes dropping at midnight ET on Fridays, it means there’s a chance to dive straight into them. So, you need to know if this series is kid-friendly. Will Outlander season 7B offer something suitable for them to watch?
If you know Claire and Jamie’s story already, you know the answer. This is not a child-friendly series, and there is nothing about the new season that changes that!
Outlander is rated TV-MA for many reasons
This is a story that has been TV-MA from the very beginning. It is aimed at those 18 and over, and once you watch the first few episodes of the series, you’ll understand why. The seventh season just continues the type of content that has already been shown.
Well, I will say that like Game of Thrones, some of the gratuitous content was minimized. It’s not as traumatic as the first season, but there are still some heavy moments in the series.
Sex & nudity: This is a series that doesn’t shy away from sex and nudity. The first season alone included male full-frontal nudity. We also regularly see women’s breasts on show. While the Outlander season 7B premiere didn’t include sex and nudity, it doesn’t mean there isn’t more coming. There are a few scenes from the books that we’re expecting to see play out, and one of them involves Claire Fraser.
Language: Claire Fraser has a potty mouth. There’s no other way of putting that. She loves the F-bomb. We’ve also had plenty of characters use the C-word. In Outlander season 7, episode 9 alone, Laoghaire drops the W-word multiple times in conversation, and it is used as a harsh slur. Roger also loves the use of the F-bomb throughout the series, and he utters it multiple times throughout the Outlander season 7B premiere.
Violence & gore: While the Outlander season 7B premiere didn’t include a lot in the way of violence and gore, there is more coming. Eventually, we will head back to America, which means there are more battle scenes to come. There has been violence and gore from the very first episode, with Claire and Jamie immediately connecting as Claire popped Jamie’s dislocated shoulder back in.
I will admit that nothing has been on the level of the last two episodes of Outlander season 1 for me. There are some graphic moments, but those two episodes in Wentworth Prison stand out the most.
Alcohol & drugs: The whole of the sixth season saw Claire self-mediating on ether. While she probably won’t be doing that again, there is a storyline coming up that is sure to see her drinking heavily for a while.
This is a series set in the past, when alcohol was safer than water in a lot of cases. So, there’s no doubt that we’ll see a lot more drinking going on as the season continues!
Overall verdict: Who is Outlander suitable for?
If you want to avoid traumatizing your children, I’d avoid Outlander when they’re around. This is a series that’s filled with graphic violence and nudity. It’s one that’s packed with curse words, and some of the harshest that we know.
This is not suitable for those under the age of 18. There’s a reason the premium cable networks picked it up. It would have never worked for broadcast TV!
Outlander is available to stream on STARZ, with new episodes airing Fridays.
