We can all relate to the subconscious doom scroll- in between seasons of our favorite shows- where we search aimlessly for newly added shows and movies to try. While the title, Kinda Pregnant, might spark the curiosity of your teen or preteen, we don’t recommend allowing them to press play on this one.
Fans of comedy stars, Amy Schumer, leading actress, and Adam Sandler, producer, are likely familiar with the sexual content, language, and witty humor in their movies and standup comedy specials. Kinda Pregnant follows suit with its R-rating. The language is pretty intense, and included in the subject matter are threesomes, other sexual content, drug use, abortion, and falsifying pregnancy. While the message behind the humor will pull at the heartstrings of expectant mothers and those who want to become mothers, the film in its entirety is not suitable for a young audience.
Young children are definitely not the targeted audience of Kinda Pregnant, but what about teens who often watch other R-rated movies and shows? Even if you have a mature teen, it is doubtful they will find the content of Kinda Pregnant relatable. The average teen or preteen loves a good high school romantic comedy, but adding in the context of marriage and pregnancy is a bit too deep for their interests.
The theme of the movie addresses the insecurity that comes with having unmet expectations as an adult, and how it can be tricky to balance personal struggles while also trying to celebrate those around us whose lives are moving at an envious pace. Kinda Pregnant also brings to light how culture often celebrates and glorifies expectant mothers but tends to look down on or ignore single women who are not mothers.
For example, we see the main character, Lainy, feeling very isolated to the point where she feels that faking a pregnancy is her only chance at filling the void in her life. It appears that everything magically falls into place when she “becomes” pregnant. However, as dramatic irony would have it, Lainy discovers that lying and putting on a face (or belly) to pretend that you’re someone else, comes with complications of its own.
Kinda Pregnant is worth the watch with your friends or significant other, you’ll just want to make sure the kids have something separate to watch!
Kinda Pregnant is now streaming on Netflix.
