Moana is off on another adventure, this time with friends old and new. Of course, you need to know if Moana 2 is suitable for the kids.

This is a Disney movie. That usually tells you whether it’s suitable for kids or not. Disney makes a lot of family-friendly movies, but you can’t always be too certain, right? We’ve been thrown off by what we thought would be kid-friendly before.

Moana 2 sees our titular heroine on another adventure. Her ancestor Tautai Vasa appears in a vision, explaining that Nalo, the malicious storm god, wants power over mortals and has sunk the legendary island of Motufetu. This island connects the people, and now she needs to find the island before the people of Motunui go extinct.

Moana 2 age rating: Explaining the PG rating

This is a movie that’s aimed at children of all ages. It is officially rated PG, which means the majority of children are going to find it entertaining and fun. I’d say those under three may not find it all that fun because they don’t fully understand it all, but it’s colorful and bright for them so it’s still worth taking them to a family-friendly showing in your movie theater—or put it on when it comes to Disney+.

Sex & nudity: It’s a Disney kids movie. There isn’t any sex or nudity shown throughout the movie. Well, okay, the nudity comes from Maui who doesn’t wear a top. He’s covered in tattoos that all mean something and tell a story.

Violence & gore: There are some scary scenes in this movie as the action starts, just like the first Moana. They’re not unsuitable for kids, but some kids may find them scarier than others. It’s important to assess what your kids are used to. This is an adventure, and that means danger and peril. The story is about overcoming adversity and facing that danger for the sake of others, so there are still some important lessons to learn within it.

Language: The worst of the words you’ll hear is “suck.”

Alcohol & drugs: None of this is shown throughout this Moana sequel.

Overall verdict: Who is it appropriate for?

This is a movie to take the whole family to see. Everyone will find something to enjoy, whether it’s through the actual story and action or through the song and dance.

I will note that there is a lesson in death and what that means. It’s something that will likely come up with younger kids as they try to wrap their heads around what it means. I do believe showing this at such a young age in an appropriate way like through Moana 2 helps a lot of children cope with death in real life a lot more. So, I wouldn’t say that this is a reason to skip it.

Moana 2 is now out in theaters and will head to Disney+ in the future.
