Mid-Century Modern parents guide: A little too risque for the kids

Mid-Century Modern is a light and frothy new sitcom for adults.

Mid-Century Modern is basically a take on The Golden Girls, but with gay men instead of middle-aged women. Bunny Schneiderman (Nathan Lane) is the Blanche, Arthur Broussard (Nathan Lee Graham) is the Dorothy, Jerry Frank (Matt Bomer) is the Rose, and Sybil Schneiderman (Linda Lavin), Bunny's mother, is the Sophia. It's a fun and fresh take on the traditional sitcom, and it's received positive reviews so far.

This show is also notable for a sad reason: It marks the final role of veteran actress Linda Lavin. She died from cancer while the show was being filmed, and it was decided that the character of Sybil would be killed off rather than recast. A whole episode therefore deals with her death, and it's an upsetting watch if you've lost a parent.

Despite the fact that Mid-Century Modern is available on Disney+ internationally (Hulu in the USA), it's not exactly what you'd call Disney content! It's not made for children - it's made for gay men first and foremost.

Mid-Century Modern is full of risque jokes

Mid-Century Modern doesn't have an official age rating so far, so consider this your guide as to whether you should let your kids watch it or not.

Sex and nudity: Bunny owns an underwear store, so there's plenty of discussion of bras. That's not all, of course - the characters talk about sex a lot, and there's endless dirty jokes. Great fun for adults, but kids will want explanations, and parents might not find those easy to provide. Characters are seen before having sex, but not actually having sex, and there's no nudity.

Violence and gore: There's no violence or gore whatsoever in Mid-Century Modern! Jut make sure you don't confuse it with a horror movie from 2022, Mid-Century! This TV show has nothing whatsoever to do with the movie.

Language: Mid-Century Modern has a lot of bad language. There's the b word, the f word, the c word... pretty much every swear word you can imagine is in there! Definitely not a show to watch with your kids if you don't want them exposed to bad language.

Drinking and drugs: Drugs are mentioned, and there's a lot of drinking. It's all played for laughs, of course.

Frightening or intense scenes: There's nothing frightening in Mid-Century Modern, but some viewers may find the scene where Bunny recounts his mother's passing to be quite intense. It's definitely the saddest scene in what is otherwise a very funny show.

Mid-Century Modern is a great show for parents, but definitely a "watch when you're older" for younger kids. Teenagers 15 and up might enjoy it, however, if you're okay with the swearing and the sexual jokes. It does have a very strong message about friendship and love and how important it is to have a good support group around you.

While the writers set out to not have the show be political in any way, there is one episode where Jerry turns a homophobic politican away from her anti-gay ideals simply by being nice to her. That may be an episode worth talking about with older children.
