The sequel to M3GAN is now available in theaters, but is it still something that works for the teenagers in your home? M3GAN 2.0 is a lot of fun, and we break down the factors that make up the content warning.
M3GAN 2.0 picks up two years after the events of the first movie. The timing is perfect considering it’s been about that time since we first watched how robotic technology can go very wrong. When the underlying code ends up in the wrong hands, it’s certainly time to bring out the original robot to protect everyone else.
A defense contractor has stolen the underlying tech for M3GAN, and now Gemma has to do something she never thought she would: bring M3GAN back. It’s the only option to take down Amelia, who has become far too dangerous for humanity to deal with, but can Gemma tweak things to protect people from her own creation again?
M3GAN 2.0 parents guide: Explaining the PG-13 rating
Like the first movie, this sequel is still PG-13, which suggests that it’s good for teenagers to watch. Of course, you want to make sure, before you take them to the movies. And just because a movie is rated PG-13, it doesn’t mean that it’s suitable for your children.
Sex & nudity: There is one scene that will stand out, when a man rips open his shirt and starts kissing a woman. She pushes him away before anything else can happen. Other than that, there is no romantic element to the story.
Violence & gore: Like with the first movie, M3GAN 2.0 does get somewhat violent. After all, this is about the dangers of robots and technology. There are scenes where people are attacked by Amelia, as well as a few somewhat graphic scenes, such as a man’s spine being ripped out and a man’s neck being twisted 180 degrees.
Most of the violence starts on the screen, and then the camera cuts away before you really get to see what’s happening. This allows it to remain PG-13. Much of the violence will make a lot of people laugh, because it’s supposed to be a horror-comedy at this point.
Language: M3GAN 2.0 does include some profanity, including a couple of uses of the F-bomb. That’s the worst of the words, and they’re spaced out. Other words include the S-word, B-word, and D-word.
Alcohol & drugs: There’s one scene with people drinking at a bar, but there’s nothing explicit and nobody is overly drunk.
Overall verdict: Who is M3GAN 2.0 appropriate for?
Overall, this is a movie that is made knowing that teenagers are likely to watch it. The violence is a little more graphic than the first movie, but not in an overly gratuitous way. It focuses on the dangers of robot technology and how computer software isn’t always easy to predict.
If your children loved M3GAN, then they’re sure to want to watch the second one. This is something I could definitely see my 13-year-old daughter loving, but it’s not suitable for the nine-year-old.
M3GAN 2.0 is now out in theaters.
