It’s been more than two decades since the release of I Know What You Did Last Summer, but there’s some exciting news. The requel is out.
This is a new movie that features a new cast and the original cast. It’s set in the same universe as the original story, so that means everything Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinz Jr.’s characters went through is still on their minds. However, they’ll need to deal with their trauma if they want to help the newer characters deal with the consequences of their past actions.
Of course, you’re going to want to relive the experience of the original movie, and you’ll want to enjoy the nostalgia that’s included via Easter eggs in the new version. However, this isn’t something to watch with the kids, especially the younger ones!

I Know What You Did Last Summer age rating: Explaining the R-rating
Like many horror movies, I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) is officially rated R in the United States. However, it’s worth noting that in many parts of the world, it’s rating 14A, 15, and even 16. This could suggest that it’s suitable for teens, so we’re looking into the reasons behind the age rating.
Sex & nudity: There are no heavily sexualized scenes throughout the new I Know What You Did Last Summer. There are some implied sexual acts, but no nudity is shown.
Violence & gore: This is a slasher movie, so you can expect a lot of violence and gore. Yes, it gets severe when it comes to the impalements and stabbings that are visually shown on the screen.
There is one scene that is sure to stand out for many younger viewers, as a man is stabbed through the shoulder and stomach by a harpoon. That man is later killed off-screen, but then his body is visibly shown, propped up with a harpoon through the chin.
There is another scene with a man found dead with his eyes missing, and the camera stays on that for some time. To be honest, this is just like the original movie, so it won’t surprise you if you’ve been a fan of this genre for some time.
Language: The use of heavy language is normal for this horror genre, and there are multiple F-bombs used throughout. There is also one use of the C-word, which could turn a few people off.
Of course, other swear words including the S-word, B-words, and D-word are also regularly used. There are also a lot of religious terms used as various characters are dealing with the horror that is the Fisherman.
Alcohol & drugs: Yes, you can expect some drinking, smoking, and drug taking. The group uses weed in the car while they are driving, and there is a scene with multiple people drinking whiskey and tequila. These are college students who want to enjoy their time, and they’re doing exactly what many other college students will do.
Overall verdict: Who is I Know What You Did Last Summer appropriate for?
This is not a movie that’s aimed at children, and I wouldn’t take anyone who is under the age of 15 to the movie theaters to see this. In fact, I wouldn’t be comfortable taking some teenagers to see this.
If your teens have already watched the original I Know What You Did Last Summer and its sequel I Still Know What You Did Last Summer, then this could be a great addition, but I’d potentially wait for it to come to streaming for them. This is gory and violent, and it can be too much for younger viewers.
I Know What You Did Last Summer is currently in theaters.
