Hot Frosty has become Netflix's No. 1 movie, but is it a good pick for families?
By Bianca Woods
Hot Frosty hit the number 1 spot in Netflix's Top 10 movies within the first 48 hours of its release and is quickly getting attention from subscribers.
Kathy, played by Lacey Chabert, is a small-town widow and owner of Kathy's Kafe. She receives a special scarf from a couple who is hopeful to help her find her next love. Just how special is the scarf? It must have been knitted with magic because after Kathy decides to give it away to a chiseled snowman, a mysterious new man starts to cause mischief in the town!
While the sheriff of the town eagerly searches for the criminal who broke a local shop's window and stole some clothes, the snowman-turned-Tom Cruise is on the loose. Jack, played by Dustin Milligan, finds Kathy, who agrees to let him crash on her couch and keep him out of trouble. After some observation, she counterintuitively accepts the fact that he must, in fact, be a former snowman.
Other women in the town get one glimpse of Kathy's new "friend" Jack and are smitten by his good looks, hence the movie title, Hot Frosty. Jack isn't just good-looking though; he has a kind and innocent heart for others. Almost like fate, Jack immediately falls in love with Kathy for bringing him to life. She is hesitant as she still grapples with the grief of losing her husband, but Jack is patient. He finds other ways to make Kathy feel loved, like cooking for her, becoming a self-taught repairman, and serving students at the local middle school.
Hot Frosty is the love story we all dream of-- having someone who adores us, even when we struggle to love ourselves. Jack also shows the sheriff of the town that good guys can sometimes do naughty things and still have the best intentions. Jack makes Santa's nice list for sure but does Hot Frosty make the nice list for family-friendly movies?
This holiday rom-com is great for a mom's night in, but probably not going to keep the attention of your little ones, despite the PG rating. There are a couple of innuendos, and millennial moms will also find humor in lead actress, Lacey Chabert's ode to Mean Girls hidden in one of the scenes. However, there is nothing particularly entertaining for children.
Grab some hot cocoa, a couple of friends, and enjoy some holiday Hot Frosty cheer with a great adult lesson: in the words of the film's local shop owner Mrs. Holly, "... you'll never feel the warmth if you don't venture out into the cold".
Hot Frosty is streaming now on Netflix.
