Are you ready for horror this Valentine’s Day? Heart Eyes is the release for you. Is it the release for the kids in the house, though?
Horror is one of those genres that is sometimes difficult to decide on. There are some movies aimed at teenagers, but then there are others that are only for the adults. The trailers don’t make it all that easy to tell which is which at times.
Heart Eyes follows the “Heart Eyes Killer” who always strikes on Valentine’s Day. No couple is safe, as this serial killer will stalk and murder those celebrating. Can anyone survive this year?
Heart Eyes age rating: This horror is R-rated
Officially, this is one of those horrors that is rated R. That means it’s aimed at the adults in the house. However, R-rated movies aren’t always that gory. There are parts of the world, such as parts of Canada and Ireland, where this movie is rated 14A and 16.
Sex & nudity: Despite the movie being horror and set during Valentine’s Day, it isn’t packed with that much sex or nudity. The focus is on the violence. However, there is a scene where a woman’s vibrator is visible to people. There are also times when sex is left to the imagination. You can hear the moans, and this could make it a little uncomfortable viewing for the kids with you.
Violence & gore: This horror movie is packed with violence. There’s a scene where a man is looking through a camera lens, and the killer uses a machete through the lens to kill the man. This is all clearly visible on the screen, with the camera panning on it maybe a little longer than was needed.
There are some visual head explosions. One of those is when a woman is trapped inside a wine presser. The camera focuses on her head as it is squeezed and explodes. The blood and gore are graphic throughout the movie.
Language: The worst of the swear words is the F-bomb, so you can avoid the C-word in this movie. The F-bomb is dropped numerous times throughout the movie. There are also mentions of the S-word, “hell,” “damn” and other similar words.
Alcohol & drugs: There is the implied use of cannabis. There are some scenes were couples are drinking. Nothing is glorified.
Overall verdict: Who is Heart Eyes appropriate for?
This isn’t going to be a horror to watch with the younger kids. It’s something to avoid with tweens in the house. The level of gore and violence does put it up there with movies worthy of the R-rating.
That being said, it’s going to depend on your children. As a teen, this is the type of movie I would have loved watching. I’m into the blood and the violence, and one of my children is the exact same as me. The other, not so much, and I know other children who would be terrified, even at the age of 16 to 18. So, I’d say watch this movie first yourself and then judge if you think your older teen could watch it.
Heart Eyes is now out in theaters.
