There is a magical thrill that comes with whooshing sounds and a mysterious blue box appearing out of thin air. There is a rush that fills your heart when you hear a hurried whisper of "Run," followed by the most incredible adventures in all of time and space. And now, even the smallest of companions will experience that thrill because Doctor Who will soon be taking them for a ride.
The BBC announced on June 12, 2025, that a Doctor Who animated series will be coming to their preschool-aged CBeebies channel. It will be separate from the Doctor Who storyline while still having the whimsical Time Lord galavanting around the galaxy. They are currently searching for the right production company to animate and produce the series. While that means that the show is still in its earliest stages, the concept has many Whovian parents excited.
I was introduced to Doctor Who back when my firstborn was an infant. He was a preemie, so we were quarantined for all of winter to keep him safe, and I found this silly sci-fi show on Netflix to alleviate the boredom. But it became so much more than that. The Doctor gave me light to look towards when I was swallowed in the darkness of postpartum anxiety and depression. Through the Doctor's companions, I recognized that even as an ordinary person, I had significant worth. And I learned to see the best in humanity, even when it feels like there is none left.
Within all the action and antics of the Doctor, there are incredible lessons to be learned. That's why the announcement of a Doctor Who show for young children is so exciting. You can teach kids numbers, letters, and shapes with many different TV shows. But a show that teaches courage, kindness, emotional intelligence, and love? That is a unique offering, and is much needed in today's world. While the original Doctor Who is still a great idea for older kids and families, having a series with the same premise specifically for younger children can only add to the franchise's assets.
As a Whovian myself, I am very interested in seeing how this announcement plays out. I would love to see a show that gives kids confidence and compassion while also throwing in a bunch of "wibbly wobbly timey-wimey stuff." I think teaching our children to dream big and notice the wonders of the universe is essential, and the Doctor is the perfect being to do that. Let's hope that the BBC finds a production company who says "Allons-y," and we'll see this delightful concept come to life.
