There have been plenty of versions of Cinderella over the years. The iconic animated version from Disney is likely the one you remember the most, but there have been various live-action versions developed.

Well, there’s another version coming, but this one will have a twist based on the point of view of the story. The musical series has been in the works for some time, with two streamers battling it out for the rights, and now Disney+ has won.

Rachel Shukert is going to be writer and EP on the new Cinderella, which isn’t going to be your traditional take. You know Cinderella’s story. She went from rags to riches all because of one ball. But if it wasn’t for a particular Fairy Godmother, she would have never ended up at the ball. Oh how her life could have changed!

It’s the Fairy Godparents’ view that we’re getting with the new musical series. There aren’t too many details about what this means for the story. Will we get to see the world of the Fairy Godparents and how Cinderella’s was chosen? Will we get to see a discussion about why Cinderella was chosen to get a Fairy Godmother to help her get to the ball?

There are plenty of scenes that could happen as the story of Cinderella plays out. There’s always the discussion afterward when Cinderella ends up marrying the prince. What did the fairies think after that, and was that always the plan?

Amazon also wanted the project

It turns out that there was a bidding war, according to Deadline. Amazon was also looking at landing the rights to the series, which makes sense considering it recently released the musical version starring Camila Cabello in 2021. Billy Porter played Fab G, the Fairy Godparent for that version of the events.

However, in the end, Cinderella is something that a lot of people associate with Disney, and that’s all thanks to the 1950 animated movie. So, it does make sense for it to land the rights.

It’s worth noting that the new musical version is going to be based on the Rodgers & Hammerstein version, which was originally written for television in 1957 for Julie Andrews to play the lead. There was also the 1997 version with Brandy as Cinderella and Whitney Houston taking on the iconic Fairy Godmother role.

There is no set release date just yet, but with this going to Disney+, it’s sure to be a great release for the family. We’ll be sure to keep an eye on everything about it.
