Captain America: Brave New World parents guide: Is this another Marvel movie for the kids?

Marvel movies tend to be for the whole family, but not all of them. What about Captain America: Brave New World?

The Marvel universe continues to grow and expand. The latest installment is Captain America: Brave New World, which picks up off the back of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.

Of course, parents need to know if a movie is suitable for their kids before they head to the theaters. While most Marvel movies are good for the majority of the family, not all of them are. There is a move to make them for older teens and even adults.

Captain America: Brave New World’s PG-13 age rating explained

The world of Captain America has grown since the end of Avengers: Endgame. Steve Rogers has retired, finding a way to the past to grow old with Peggy. It left Bucky and Sam to figure things out for themselves, and the mantel of Captain America passed on. It was to Sam, but he initially didn’t want to take it on. By the end of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier, he changed his mind and realized that there was a reason Steve wanted him to take it on.

And here we are with Captain America: Brave New World. However, how did the series land a PG-13 age rating? Is it right?

Sex & nudity: There is no sex or nudity in the movie. This is like a lot of Marvel movies, where the focus is on the action and the storytelling.

Violence & gore: As you would expect with a movie involving superheroes, there is some violence. It’s the level of violence that puts it at a PG-13 rating rather than an R-rating. While it can be heavy at times, there is nothing too graphic.

There are some fantastical fistfights. There is an instance of a man shooting himself in the mouth, but nothing is shown of the aftermath. We do see the odd injury and blood from the injury. However, this is nothing outside the ordinary for past Marvel movies—it’s nothing on the level of Deadpool!

Language: There are some swear words but nothing too major. The worst of the words is the S-word, which is used a few times. The B-word and words like “a*s” and “b*****d” are used frequently. These were frequently used in previous Marvel movies, so I wouldn’t say they are too over the top for the nature of the movie.

Alcohol & drugs: There is one scene where a character takes a pill. That’s the only inclusion of alcohol and drugs spotted in the film.

Overall verdict: Who is Captain America: Brave New World appropriate for?

This is one of those movies that is great for teenagers. If you let them watch previous Marvel movies, then this one is fine for them.

What about the younger kids? This will depend on your kids. The majority of them are going to see this as a superhero movie. It means they’re not overly scared, and there’s always the knowledge that the bad guy is going to lose—unless it’s Avengers: Infinity War, of course! This helps them deal with the bad and they look forward to the good guy winning.

Captain America: Brave New World is available in theaters now.
