It's official! Bluey will be barking into the movie theaters and us Bluey fans here on The Parent Watch couldn't be more excited! When "The Sign" premiered back in April, we thought that was a huge deal, as it was the longest episode of the Aussie-based series, wagging in at 28 minutes.
In that delightful segment, Bluey learns about the changes in life and how they could weave a tapestry of events leading to them. First, it was about moving from her childhood home, then it was about the wedding of her uncle and her godmother. The two plots correlated beautifully to tell a story through the eyes of a child. While it eventually worked out in Bluey's favor, life changes happen, and it's natural to have reactions.
With three seasons, a series of minisodes, and balloons in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, Bluey has become a global phenomenon. And it's not just the lovable characters, but the storylines, and they revealed lessons and realistic insights.
Now, we'll be getting a full-length feature movie, starring Bluey, her family, her friends, and everyone else in her world. We don't know what the official storyline will be yet, but what we do know is that the film will be something everyone will enjoy, adults and kids alike.
What to know about Bluey's big movie
Per Deadline, the release date of the Bluey movie will be sometime in 2027, which if you're counting is three years. Following its international theatrical launch, fans can tune in on ABC iView in Australia and Disney+ here in the US.
Moreover, the production teams behind the Bluey film will be a collaboration between BBC Studios, Ludo Studios, and Disney, as the latter has nearly every Bluey episode on Disney+, with televised airings on the Disney Channel and Disney Jr.
According to a press release from the BBC, in which The Parent Watch obtained, creator Joe Brumm revealed his excitement about his new Bluey project and how it'll tie in with the series as a whole.
"I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on 'The Sign' in 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought Bluey deserved a theatrical movie. I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman, and Disney to bring this new Bluey story to the big screen."
In that same release, Disney Entertainment execs Alan Bergman and Dana Walden also shared their eagerness to get the film on screen, as it deservedly should, because Bluey has become the most successful family show to date in the past few years. First, in its home country of Australia, then the US, thanks to the Disney Deal.
"Since its debut on Disney Jr. and Disney+, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, uniting families everywhere with its heartfelt stories of play, imagination, and connection. We are so proud to expand upon our relationship with BBC Studios to bring the magic of Bluey to the big screen – for real life! – and we are deeply grateful to Joe Brumm for creating a world that continues to inspire and delight families everywhere."
You can expect Dave McCormack and Melanie Zanetti to return to voice Bandit and Chilli, the parents of Bluey and her sister, Bingo in the movie.
As it'll be a long wait until we get to see big screen Bluey, we'll be rewatching the episode and the newly dropped third batch of Bluey minisodes over at Disney+!
