Apple TV+’s action-packed, eco-conscious adventure series, Jane, is back for a highly anticipated third season. Inspired by the work of legendary environmentalist Dr. Jane Goodall, the series follows a young environmentalist, Jane Garcia as she embarks on mission-driven adventures that blend imagination with real-world conservation. While this third season is set to be the final one, you can stream all previous seasons on the platform now. The season premiere is set for Apr. 18, 2025

The Emmy-winning series stars Ava Louise Murchison as Jane Garcia, Mason Blomberg as David, Jane's best friend who shares the same imagination as Jane. Tamara Almeida as Maria, Jane's mother, and Greybeard, a stuffed animal that Jane owns and turns to an animated form of a real chimpanzee from her imagination. The show is produced by Sinking Ship Entertainment and the Jane Goodall Instutute with J.J Johnson, Christin Simms, Blair Powers, Matthew J.R. Bishop, Andria Teather.

The Parent Watch sat down with creator and executive producer J.J. Johnson, VFX executive producer Matthew J.R. Bishop, and stars Murchison and Blomberg to talk about what fans can expect in Season 3. The team behind Jane opens up about their creative process, specifically spotlighting the incredible award-winning visual effects while the young leads discuss the importance of empowering young audiences. Read on to get a pick into what it’s like bringing animals—and environmental issues—to life on screen like never before.

The Parent Watch: J.J., Jane blends the adventure and education that we all love, especially if you grew up watching her in some capacity. How was it to, one, bring this to life for kids and families and two, keep the imagination inspired for audiences?

JJ: Dr. Goodall, specifically, was a major inspiration for this show. My personal "environmental wake-up call" came when we started having kids. I remember looking at our baby’s innocent face and immediately thinking, 'Oh my gosh, what’s happening to this planet? And how do we make it a better place to live?' It took me back to when I was a kid in the '80s, feeling those same emotions and not knowing what to do about them. That’s when I stumbled upon Dr. Goodall and all the incredible work she was doing. It made me feel safer, knowing there were people like her out there defending the planet.

So, when we decided to really lean into this moment—the environmental crisis and what we can do to stop it—reaching out to her and her organization to pitch this series felt like the natural first step. They’ve been incredibly supportive from the very beginning.

To your point, what we really want to focus on is helping kids feel empowered. Kids are smart—they know there’s a challenge. So, how do we give them an entertaining action-adventure show with a message of conservation, and also real tools and concrete actions they can take to make a difference, both at home and in their communities?

Matt, when it came to this specific show, what was so unique about it that made you say, 'Hey, this is something that I would love to work on [as a VFX artist]?

Matt: Well, this was an incredibly exciting opportunity because it was a rare chance to create an environmental show that’s over-the-top and action-packed, but also has heart—and, importantly, stays grounded in a sense of reality. Sometimes, I think some of the concepts are almost too wild, but one of the things I really love about the show is that it never talks down to the audience. It doesn’t try to oversimplify things. Instead, it tackles the issues head-on and explores real solutions for improving the environment.

At the same time, it lets us feature realistic animals and creatures, and really showcase the beauty of nature and the importance of conservation—all while doing it in a way that kids can engage with in a safe, interactive environment. No animals were harmed in the production, of course—we created them all using visual effects.

Where it all leads by the end of the season is something truly special. There’s this magical moment that I think will create a next-level emotional connection between the audience, Greybeard, and a baby chimpanzee. A bit of a spoiler alert—but there’s some really magical stuff coming.

In terms of collaboration, I'm sure you both had conversations about how you wanted the show to be. Environmental storytelling, like you said, can be harsh sometimes for kids, especially because it's a bit scary to talk about everything that's going on in the world. With this show, it's digestible in a way that I can share with my cousin who's younger than me. In the future, I can share with my kids. Is there a specific moment that you're super excited for the audience to look at and enjoy?

JJ: Yes, I mean, so many in this season. The one that stands out for me is obviously our finale episode, where we got an appearance by Dr. Goodall herself. It's a full circle moment. It's an episode where our Jane loses her hopefulness. That's been her greatest strength throughout all of this is: She will never give up. In this particular episode, some situations happened that really challenged that. Obviously, the one person that can reignite that for her is Dr. Goodall. To see all three seasons culminate into that episode was just really rewarding. The audience is really going to get a kick out of it.

MB: For me, it's definitely the Baby Hippo. It is insanely adorable. Also, what I love is that I feel like the animals are a great intro into for that next generation of Jane fans. I feel what's exciting with this, it's a full family show because you can bring in the younger audience with some of the adorable animals, and some of the concepts might be too large, but they can grow into it. That's why I really feel like this show has to exist on Apple TV+, because it is a network that supports these causes. It's a network that actually allows us to tell stories that connect with everyone in the family. Visually, I think that's going to be a super exciting episode, but it all helps to build towards the season finale, which is, I think, our best work.

Ava Louise, you have the titular role as Jane. I wanted to know what made you want to be a part of the show? What made you want to gravitate towards playing Jane?

Ava Louise Murchison: Just the fact that this show is such a big on the world and that has such a message to share to people. If you're a kid or an adult, you can make little steps to make big changes. Just to know that I'm going to be a part of something that impactful is crazy; Since the moment I got the role, I'm so grateful to be a part of something this big.

I'd love to know how you both got into character!

ALM: Our relationship on the TV show isn't far from our relationship in real life, so it wasn't that hard, but, we did get really close during the filming!

MB: Yeah, we were besties!

Mason, this show has an incredible visual effects. Was there a specific animal or featured part of the show where you [both] were like, 'Oh, this is really cool to be a part of?'

MB: All of it. Definitely all of it. One of the coolest ones was in the new season coming up; The chimpanzee episode because that was really inspiring because we got to meet Dr. Jane Goodall, and also that we got to study our best friend, our Greybeard, who is always accompanying us on our journeys. That was a really interesting one.

If you two could team up with Jane Goodall, in real life, for a mission, what would you want to do and where would you go?

ALM: Well, I would want to save turtles because believe it or not, we didn't actually cover them in the series. Plastic waste is a huge part of saving the environment and trying to cut down on that. I would really want to do that. I think that it would be amazing to have Dr. Jane alongside with me and Mason. I would definitely want to save them.

MB: I would say an endangered owl species because, my whole life, the owl has been my favorite animal. They're just really special to me, and I would love to go out and do something to save them.

That's awesome! This show is so important for environmental education, especially being young people yourselves. It's super important to see that representation. For anyone who has seen the show that you know, what has been their reaction? Any friends or family, specifically?

ALM: My little brothers actually watch this show, and they love it. To see them actually learning from me and Mason, of course, this show really has an impact on kids. I got to see it in real life, and that was crazy. They even have the Jane [Goodall] book, and they're constantly flipping through it and learning new animal facts, and it's great!

MB: My friends and family, we had a little party when we watched it, and they were all like, 'That's Mason on the screen!' It was just a really funny reaction to see everyone seeing me on TV. But it was also super fun to film the show. When I got to see the final result, I was also super shocked because he looked so good.

It's visually stunning and Mason, it's so cool that you also had a little watch party! What advice would your character give to kids watching the show who want to make a difference in the environment and with animals?

ALM: Jane would just say that even if you're a kid or an adult, every little decision you make can lead to a big change. You can just keep getting involved and taking action. Cutting down on plastic use, using a metal straw, reusing clothes, things like that. The little things really count to make a big difference.
